Verdict Good: After nearly a decade of Olympic lifting and coaching, Chad still calls it worth every penny — and prefers it over Eleiko every time.
Chad has owned the American Barbell stainless steel competition bar (men’s 20 kg) since 2016, and he uses it for Olympic weightlifting and coaching in a non-climate-controlled gym in Florida. He snatches 130+ kg and clean & jerks 165+ kg on it. What he loves most is the fine knurling paired with the ghost center knurl: excellent grip without an overly sharp knurl, so chalk is optional even when the weights get heavy.
After about a decade, he reports nearly zero sleeve wobble, a smooth controlled spin and excellent whip. He has serviced the bar twice. In Florida humidity, the only rust or wear he sees is minimal and inside the collars — and he says it still performs like new. His verdict is simple: absolutely worth it, he would buy again, and he prefers it over Eleiko 10 out of 10 times. Bugs? Almost nothing beyond that minor collar-area wear after ten years in Florida.

Product Description
The American Barbell Stainless Bearing Bar (Competition Spec) is American Barbell’s stainless steel Olympic competition bar. American Barbell builds the shaft from precision-ground and straightened stainless steel, tests each batch of raw material for a consistent 190,000 PSI tensile strength, and lists a unique feel to the knurling set in stainless compared with other finishes. The 20 kg men’s bar is 28 mm in diameter and 2200 mm long, with Olympic knurl marks and what American Barbell calls ghost center knurling.
American Barbell’s exclusive concealed bearing system is designed for a smoother spin as the weight increases, with a dust and chalk seal to help prolong bearing life. Sleeves are precision-welded with a semi-concealed weld so plates sit flush against the collar, and they get a hard chrome finish. American Barbell lists a loadable sleeve length of 16.338″ on the 20 kg bar, Made in USA construction and a limited lifetime warranty. A 15 kg / 25 mm version is also available.
