The verdict Good: Inexpensive, lightweight and unrestricted enough for a full-range squat, though they stretch out a bit over a full day of hard use. Plan to replace them periodically.

Our Verified Review

Owned and tested by our reviewer, Will

Will wears the men’s REI Co-op Trailmade Pants in grey (the regular hiking pants, not the rain pants, and his do not have convertible legs) for range days, training and competitions. What he likes most is that they are inexpensive and lightweight, with easy, unrestricted movement. He says the fit is good, and they allowed for a full-range squat. They are also fast drying.

Durability is his only complaint: they stretch out a bit over a full day of hard use, though Will recognizes that tactical fitness competition is not what they were made for. Asked how the fabric has held up, he says good. He took the zipper pull off the leg pocket because he was worried it would snag on things. He says they are worth the price, but plan to replace them periodically. His verdict: Good.

Will also reviewed the GORUCK Challenge Pants, which he bought for the same kind of training days; those were Not Good on fit and stretch. For his feet on those days, see his review of the Garmont Nemesis 4 boots, which he wears for rucking, tactical fitness and range days.

The Good ✅

  • Inexpensive: Will likes the price and says they are worth it.
  • Lightweight: One of the things he likes most about them.
  • Unrestricted Movement: Easy, unrestricted movement; they allowed for a full-range squat.
  • Good Fit: Will says the fit is good.
  • Fast Drying: He calls them fast drying.

The Not Good ❌

Flaws, but not deal-breakers.

  • Stretch Out Over a Hard Day: They stretch out a bit over a full day of hard use. Durability is Will’s only complaint, though he notes tactical fitness competition is not what they were made for.
  • Plan to Replace Them: Worth the price, but he says to plan on replacing them periodically.
  • Leg Pocket Zipper Pull: He took the pull off the leg pocket zipper because he was worried it would snag on things.

What others think

How our verdict compares with other reviews

Overall reception: A well-liked budget pick. OutdoorGearLab gives it 70 out of 100 and calls it fantastic hiking pants at an affordable price, and CleverHiker rates it 4.4 out of 5 as its best budget hiking pants.

Where owners agree: Testers praise the value, light weight, breathable fabric and comfort. OutdoorGearLab also notes the thigh-pocket zipper pull sticks out more than on other pants.

Where owners disagree: Durability. OutdoorGearLab scores durability just 4.5 out of 10, and CleverHiker says the light fabric holds up on maintained trails but won’t love repeated bushwhacking, rock contact and kneeling. Testers split on whether that matters for normal hiking.

Our take: Will matches that. He likes the price, light weight and unrestricted movement, but they stretch out over a hard day, and he removed the zipper pull so it wouldn’t snag.
