Is it Good, or Not Good?

Altra Lone Peak 9 GTR

Our Review

Verdict Good: After using the Altra Lone Peak 9 GTR (Gore-Tex waterproof version) as my primary rucking and outdoor training shoe for the past five months, I’ve been genuinely impressed with how well they perform for rucking and tactical fitness. They’ve become my go-to “do-all” shoe. If you’re highly specialized (ultra-long rucks or pure trail running), you might want something more purpose-built.

I’ve tested them extensively while carrying a heavy backpack on pavement, as well as during a full-day outdoor fitness competition on mixed terrain — grass, gravel, pavement, rope climbs, and obstacles. My rucking sessions are relatively short (usually around 3 miles with a 40–70 lb pack), so these shoes shine more as a versatile generalist option rather than a dedicated long-distance rucking shoe. They would probably also work well for light/day hiking.

The Good

  • The wide toe box feels stable and comfortable from the very first wear.
  • Waterproofing is excellent — feet stayed completely dry through puddles, dew, and light rain.
  • Grip performs surprisingly well on mixed surfaces and stayed reliable during rope climbs and obstacle course elements.
  • Durability has been better than expected. After five months of pavement-heavy rucking and mixed-terrain use, visible wear is reasonable and actually slightly better than many reviews suggested.
  • The moderate cushioning keeps the shoe feeling stable and grounded when carrying weight.
  • The zero-drop platform took a little getting used to — my calves felt it during the first few rucks — but it quickly resolved.

The Not Good

  • Breathability is reduced due to waterproofing, so feet tend to get warmer and sweatier on hotter days or during high-intensity sessions (though this is a minor nitpick for a waterproof shoe).
  • The Gore-Tex membrane adds weight compared to the non-waterproof Lone Peak 9.

Product Description

The Altra Lone Peak 9 GTR is the waterproof Gore-Tex version of Altra’s popular zero-drop trail shoe. It features a wide toe box, FootShape toe design, a moderate 25 mm stack height with a built-in rock plate for underfoot protection, and an aggressive lug pattern for mixed terrain. Designed primarily for trail running and hiking, the GTR model adds a fully waterproof Gore-Tex membrane while preserving Altra’s signature natural running feel. It weighs approximately 10.8 oz (306 g) per shoe in a men’s size 9 (For the record, this weight is a standard note, I don’t wear a 9 🙂 Thanks for reading!
