Our Verified Review

Owned and tested by our reviewer, Will

Will has the 5.11 Maverick Assaulter’s Belt in FDE, size XL, for a typical 36 to 37 inch waist. He used it as a light duty belt to carry mags and a pistol on some range days, but he doesn’t use it much anymore.

His biggest problem is that it is very difficult to fit through most belt loops. The front web loop serves no real purpose as far as he can tell, and it makes it even harder to get through belt loops. It is indeed very stiff. The COBRA buckle is fine, but it really feels like too much for a light duty belt, and it digs in. In Will’s words, it’s kind of like 5.11 made a duty belt but forgot to add the inner Velcro belt, so this is just a way over-built regular belt. Is it worth the price? No. His verdict: Not Good.

The Good ✅

  • Buckle Works: Will says the buckle itself is fine.
  • Very Stiff: It is indeed very stiff, which is the point of a rigger’s-style belt.

The Not Good ❌

The deal-breaker is tagged.

  • Deal-breaker Hard to Get Through Belt Loops: It is very difficult to fit through most belt loops.
  • Front Web Loop: It serves no real purpose as far as Will can tell, and it makes threading the belt even harder.
  • Buckle Is Too Much: The buckle feels like too much for a light duty belt, and it digs in.
  • Over-Built Regular Belt: Will says it is like a duty belt without the inner Velcro belt, so it ends up a way over-built regular belt.
  • Not Worth the Price: Will says no.

Will’s is FDE in XL, used as a light duty belt for mags and a pistol on range days.

What others think

How our verdict compares with other reviews

Overall reception: Well liked by the owners who review it, though we found few rating figures we could check. Mil Spec Monkey called it everything they hoped for, and the retailer reviews we read were positive.

Where owners agree: It’s stiff, durable and holds its fit once set, and the COBRA buckle is secure. Several owners say the buckle tabs can poke you when you lean forward.

Where owners disagree: Belt loops. Mil Spec Monkey and some owners say the tapered end makes it easier to thread than other COBRA belts, while others say it’s tight in standard jeans loops and that the thick buckle won’t pass through many holster loops.

Our take: Will lands firmly on the hard-to-thread side: getting it through most belt loops was his deal-breaker, and the front web loop made it worse. He also found the buckle too much for a light duty belt, which matches the complaints about it digging in.
