Verdict Good: A rugged enclosed red dot that has survived five tactical fitness competitions and counting. Just upgrade the mounting plate.
Will has owned the full-size Holosun EPS, the red 2 MOA dot version, for about a year and a half, and he runs it on his SIG P320 X5 Legion. On his X5 Legion, the optic takes the place of the rear sight, so there’s no co-witness with iron sights. He’s sold on the enclosed design and says it’s superior in dirty or wet conditions. The window is certainly smaller than some other optics, but he finds it perfectly acceptable and says it’s really not a factor overall. Battery life has been great, too: he leaves the optic on all the time and lets Shake Awake do its job, and he still hasn’t had to change the battery.
Holding zero is where the story gets more nuanced. In his words, “The optic is great, the included adapter plate is not.” He broke a screw during a competition, and that caused some problems holding zero. He switched to an aftermarket plate with a better screw system, using the better screws that came with it, and he hasn’t had any issues since. He highly recommends making the same upgrade. The optic itself has been super rugged and has made it through five tactical fitness competitions and counting without a problem. What he loves most is the competitive price point: even after paying for an upgraded plate, it’s priced well enough that he doesn’t feel too bad about it getting beat up. For competitions, he carries that same X5 Legion in the Black Scorpion Gear Level II Duty Drop & Offset Holster, which he also reviewed.
The Good ✅
- Rugged Optic: The EPS itself has been super rugged, with five tactical fitness competitions and counting behind it and no issues.
- Great Battery Life: He leaves it on all the time with Shake Awake, and after about a year and a half he still hasn’t changed the battery.
- Built for Wet and Dirty Conditions: Will finds the enclosed design superior when things get dirty or wet.
- Window Is Plenty: It’s smaller than some other optics, but the window is sufficient and really not a factor overall.
- Competitive Price: Even after upgrading the mounting plate, the price is competitive enough that he doesn’t feel too bad about it getting beat up.
The Not Good ❌
- The Included Adapter Plate: “The optic is great, the included adapter plate is not.” Will broke a screw during a competition, which caused some problems holding zero. Since switching to an aftermarket plate with a better screw system (and the better screws that came with it), he hasn’t had any issues, and he highly recommends the upgrade.
- No Co-Witness on His Setup: Will didn’t call this a complaint, but on his SIG P320 X5 Legion the optic replaces the rear sight, so there’s no co-witness. Holosun says the EPS’s ultra-low deck height supports co-witness with most factory pistol iron sights, but on Will’s setup there’s no rear sight left to co-witness with.
Product Description
The Holosun EPS-RD-2 Enclosed Pistol Sight is the full-size EPS with a 2 MOA red dot. Its fully enclosed emitter housing is designed to protect the optic from dust, debris, moisture and lint, and Holosun pairs it with an aspheric lens for a clear sight picture and an ultra-low deck height that it says supports co-witness with most factory pistol iron sights. The housing is machined from 7075-T6 aluminum and is rated IPX8 waterproof with 5000G vibration resistance.
Power comes from a side-loading CR1620 battery that you can swap without removing the optic, and Holosun lists up to 50,000 hours of runtime at brightness setting 6. It has Shake Awake motion activation, 8 daylight and 4 night vision brightness settings with memory, and a lockout mode. Holosun lists a 0.90″ x 0.63″ window, a 1.63″ x 1.19″ x 0.99″ body and a weight of 1.4 oz, with 1.5 MOA per click and ±30 MOA of windage and elevation travel.
The EPS mounts directly to a Holosun K footprint. In the box, Holosun includes an RMR-to-K adapter plate, two sizes of mounting screws (6-32 x 6.5 mm and 6-32 x 8.5 mm), a multi-tool and a lens cloth. The full-size EPS also comes with a 6 MOA dot or Holosun’s Multi-Reticle System, and with green or gold 2 MOA dots.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Holosun EPS co-witness on a SIG P320 X5 Legion?
Not on Will’s. On his P320 X5 Legion, the EPS replaces the rear sight, so there’s no co-witness. Holosun says the EPS’s ultra-low deck height supports co-witness with most factory pistol iron sights.
How long does the Holosun EPS battery last?
Will leaves his on all the time with Shake Awake, and after about a year and a half he still hasn’t changed the battery. Holosun lists up to 50,000 hours from a CR1620 battery at brightness setting 6, and the side-loading tray lets you swap it without removing the optic.
Does the Holosun EPS hold zero?
Will’s trouble holding zero came from the mount, not the optic: he broke a screw on the included adapter plate during a competition. Since switching to an aftermarket plate with a better screw system, he hasn’t had any issues, and he highly recommends that upgrade.
Is the enclosed Holosun EPS better in wet or dirty conditions?
Will thinks so. He says the enclosed design is superior in dirty or wet conditions. Holosun says the enclosed emitter housing protects the optic from dust, debris, moisture and lint, and it’s rated IPX8 waterproof.
How big is the Holosun EPS window?
Holosun lists the window at 0.90″ x 0.63″. Will says it’s smaller than some other optics but perfectly acceptable, and really not a factor overall.
