The verdict Not Good: Rigid with no sag, but limited holster compatibility leaves the MOLLE sleeve in the way, and Will would not want to wear it all day. He retired it quickly.

Our Verified Review

Owned and tested by our reviewer, Will

Will has the AR500 Armor AR Battle Belt (also sold under the Armored Republic name) in black, size XL, and he has had it for years. It was his first competition and training belt, and he quickly retired it because of a variety of issues. The biggest one is holster compatibility: in his experience most mounts attach to the belt itself, not the MOLLE sleeve, so the sleeve is always in the way.

On the plus side, Will saw no sag issues and says the belt is good and rigid — the kind of stiffness these belts need — though he wishes it would move with him better. The inner-belt Velcro holds fine (it is heavy Velcro and noisy to take off), and the plastic buckle works. Sizing landed fine for him, but he calls that luck: the belt holds its shape, so adjusting size is very difficult and it takes a long time to relax into a new setting. He would not want to wear it all day. His verdict: Not Good.

Compare: Want a battle belt that worked for us? Will’s Good pick is the Blue Force Gear GRID Belt, and Andrea’s Good pick for a smaller frame is the Grey Ghost Gear UGF Battle Belt.

The Good ✅

  • Rigid, No Sag: Will saw no sag issues and says it is good and rigid for this style of belt.
  • Velcro Holds: The inner belt and Velcro hold the duty belt in place; it is heavy Velcro.
  • Buckle Works: The buckle is plastic, but Will says it works.

The Not Good ❌

The deal-breaker is tagged.

  • Limited Holster Compatibility: Most mounts attach to the belt itself, not the MOLLE sleeve, which ends up always in the way.
  • Retired Quickly: It was his first competition and training belt, and he quickly retired it due to a variety of issues.
  • Not for All-Day Wear: Will would not want to wear this all day.
  • Deal-breaker Hard to Re-Size: It holds its shape, so adjusting size is very difficult and takes a long time to relax into a new setting.
  • Noisy Velcro: The heavy Velcro is noisy when you take the duty belt off.

Product Description

Specs and maker’s details

The AR500 Armor AR Battle Belt is a three-in-one modular belt system: a 1.5″ nylon inner belt worn through your pants loops, a 2″ SCUBA-webbing duty belt, and a 500D Cordura outer sleeve with two rows of PALS/MOLLE webbing. It uses an ITW-Nexus 3-point release buckle on the duty belt.

AR500 (Armored Republic) sizes the belt over your clothing rather than like a jeans belt: Small 27–31″, Medium 31–35″, Large 35–39″ and Extra Large 39–43″, in Black, Coyote, MultiCam and Olive Drab. Will’s is black XL.

What others think

How our verdict compares with other reviews

Overall reception: Poorly regarded among serious gear users. We found no reliable star rating, and on Reddit’s r/tacticalgear it is often called low quality, while buyers who got it in AR500 bundles are more forgiving.

Where owners agree: It’s affordable and the three-piece design is flexible, but holster fit is awkward and sizing is hard to adjust.

Where owners disagree: Whether it’s good enough. On a USCCA community thread, one bundle buyer says it seems durable and keeps mags handy, while another struggled with sizing and didn’t find it stiff enough. Reddit owners mostly say to save for a better belt.

Our take: Will’s experience balances both sides. He found it rigid with no sag, which is better than some owners report, but his deal-breaker matches the sizing complaints: it’s hard to re-size because it holds its shape. Limited holster compatibility and a belt that doesn’t move with him sealed it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions
Is the AR500 Armor AR Battle Belt good for competitions or training?

Not in Will’s experience. It was his first competition and training belt, and he quickly retired it due to a variety of issues, especially limited holster compatibility.

Does the AR500 AR Battle Belt sag under a loadout?

Will saw no sag issues. He says it is good and rigid, which is what he wants from this style of belt, though he wishes it would move with him better.

How is sizing on the AR500 AR Battle Belt?

Will’s XL was fine, but he calls that luck. The belt holds its shape, so adjusting the size is very difficult and it takes a long time to relax into a new setting. AR500 measures sizes over your clothing.

Can you mount a holster on the AR500 AR Battle Belt?

Will found holster compatibility limited. In his experience most mounts attach to the belt itself, not the MOLLE sleeve, so the sleeve is always in the way.

Will would not want to wear it all day. The buckle is plastic but works, and the Velcro is heavy and noisy to take off.
