The verdict Good: A simple, toolless fix that — paired with a Sprinco Blue spring — cleaned up ejection and softened the recoil feel on Will’s BCM RECCE-16.

Our Verified Review

Owned and tested by our reviewer, Will

Will runs the BCM H2 carbine buffer with a Sprinco Blue spring in his BCM RECCE-16 and has about 2,000 rounds on that setup. He switched after noticing brass ejecting around the 2 to 3 o’clock position and started tinkering. He originally ran the stock spring with the heavier buffer and still had forward-ejecting brass and a bit of harsh recoil feel.

What he likes most is that it is a simple fix with a toolless install. He noticed a clearer difference in how the rifle cycles once the H2 was paired with the Sprinco Blue; the ejection pattern improved, and even more so with the spring combo. He has not heard the internal weights sliding or clicking, the buffer was marked as expected out of the box, and he does not run a suppressor or plan to. He says it is worth the price. Verdict: Good.

The Good ✅

  • Simple Toolless Install: Will likes that it is a simple fix with a toolless install.
  • Smoother Recoil Feel: With the H2 (and especially with the Sprinco Blue), the harsh recoil feel improved versus the stock spring plus heavier buffer.
  • Better Ejection: It changed his ejection pattern, and even more so paired with the Sprinco Blue spring.
  • Quiet Internals: He has not noticed the weights sliding or clicking when he moves or carries the rifle.
  • Marked as Expected: Fit and finish out of the box were marked as expected.
  • Worth the Price: Will says yes.

The Not Good ❌

Flaws, but not deal-breakers.

  • Works Best With a Stronger Spring: Alone with the stock spring he still had forward-ejecting brass and harsh recoil; the combo with the Sprinco Blue is what really cleaned things up.
  • Not a Suppressor Setup: Will does not run suppressed and does not plan to, so this is an unsuppressed RECCE-16 result.

Product Description

Specs and maker’s details

The BCM H2 Carbine Buffer (Buffer-Carbine-H2) is a heavy carbine-length buffer listed at 4.6 oz, weighted with two tungsten weights and one steel weight. BCM describes it as a standard USGI-style H2 for AR-15 / M4 carbine buffer systems.

Heavier buffers are commonly used to slow cycling on carbines and over-gassed or suppressed builds. Will’s is in a BCM RECCE-16 with a Sprinco Blue spring, unsuppressed, with about 2,000 rounds on the setup. Will pairs it with a Sprinco Blue buffer spring, which he reviewed separately and also rates Good.

What others think

How our verdict compares with other reviews

Overall reception: Mixed on a small sample. Primary Arms buyers rate it 3.8 out of 5 from 5 reviews, while BCM’s own page lists 241 brand-hosted reviews.

Where owners agree: Owners say a heavier H2 buffer smooths recoil and fixes over-gassed ejection. One Primary Arms buyer who paired it with a Sprinco Blue said the improvement in recoil and ejection was immediate.

Where owners disagree: Build quality. Some Primary Arms buyers complain of internal weights sliding and making noise, and one got a unit with worn finish and no markings, while others report no issues.

Our take: Will matches the positive side. On his unsuppressed RECCE-16 with a Sprinco Blue, about 2,000 rounds in, ejection cleaned up from the 2 to 3 o’clock position and recoil softened. His buffer doesn’t rattle and was marked as expected.
