Will’s BCM RECCE-16 is the KMR-A (KeyMod) version in black with the 16-inch barrel. He uses it for training and competing, and he has roughly 2,500 to 3,000 rounds on it at this point.

Reliability has been 100%. He did have some bad reloaded ammo that it didn’t like, but that ammo failed in two other ARs the same day, so he confirmed it was not a BCM issue. That ammo manufacturer actually allowed a return and refund due to a manufacturing defect.

He doesn’t mind the factory trigger, but it is certainly unrefined. He doesn’t notice any unreasonable creep, but it is heavy and therefore doesn’t feel super consistent. It feels like a duty trigger. The stock will grab his beard sometimes and doesn’t allow for a clean over-the-back sling setup. The stock’s integrated QD mount works fine, but it leaves the sling pulling at an angle, which he calls a minor issue.

Recoil is heavy and gassy out of the box. He added an H2 buffer and a Sprinco Blue buffer spring, and that combo seems to be the sweet spot. Other than the buffer, everything else is stock; he has also added a foregrip, heat wrap, some extra BCM KeyMod QD sling mounts and an optic riser.

He finds its accuracy above average (maybe 2 MOA-ish), and he has recorded muzzle velocity with a standard deviation of 10 to 12 fps with factory ammo, which he calls a good indicator of a fairly nice barrel. The price is very reasonable for a rifle of this quality, but he suggests shopping around, because he has seen them offered at way too high a price. He doesn’t speculate on what a good price is, but says research is a good idea (leave a comment if you want to talk prices). He highly recommends it, especially as a tactical competition rifle. His verdict: Good.

Will also reviewed the Blue Force Gear Vickers sling he runs for rifle work.

The Good ✅

  • 100% Reliable: Roughly 2,500 to 3,000 rounds of training and competing. The only failures came from bad reloaded ammo that also failed in two other ARs the same day.
  • Above-Average Accuracy: Maybe 2 MOA-ish for Will, with a recorded muzzle velocity standard deviation of 10 to 12 fps with factory ammo.
  • Reasonable Price for the Quality: Very reasonable for a rifle of this quality, though he says to shop around.
  • Great for Competition: Will highly recommends it, especially as a tactical competition rifle.

The Not Good ❌

Flaws, but not deal-breakers.

  • Heavy, Unrefined Trigger: No unreasonable creep, but it is heavy and doesn’t feel super consistent. It feels like a duty trigger.
  • Gassy Recoil Out of the Box: Recoil is heavy and gassy stock. An H2 buffer and Sprinco Blue spring fixed it for him.
  • Stock Grabs His Beard: The stock will grab his beard sometimes.
  • Sling Setup Limits: No clean over-the-back sling setup, and the stock’s integrated QD mount leaves the sling pulling at an angle. A minor issue.
  • Prices Vary Widely: He has seen them offered at way too high a price, so research before you buy.

What others think

How our verdict compares with other reviews

Overall reception: Highly regarded, though we found no reliable retail rating figure. Pew Pew Tactical calls it a workhorse that earns its stellar reputation, after more than 1,500 rounds with zero reliability issues.

Where owners agree: Reviewers agree it’s reliable and accurate for a duty-style rifle. Pew Pew Tactical had it grouping around 2 MOA, and they agree the stock trigger is the weak spot.

Where owners disagree: How bad the trigger is. Pew Pew Tactical calls it by far the weakest link, with sizable creep before the break, while other owners, Will included, find it a heavy but usable duty-style trigger.

Our take: Will matches the consensus. He’s had 100% reliability over roughly 2,500 to 3,000 rounds and above-average accuracy. He finds the trigger heavy and unrefined but doesn’t notice unreasonable creep, and he tamed the gassy recoil with a buffer and spring swap.
