The verdict Not Good: The adjustable retention screws would not get tight enough to hold his mags, so he never ran it in training or competition.

Our Verified Review

Owned and tested by our reviewer, Will

Will has a single black Black Scorpion Gear AR pouch, the one that goes on the Black Scorpion Gear belt, and had it on his belt for about a month. He doesn’t know the exact model. He used it with PMAGs and regular aluminum mags with a Teflon finish.

He bought it for training and competitions, but never actually used it there because of poor retention. The pouch does have adjustable retention, but he found the screws did not get tight enough to actually give good retention. His verdict: Not Good.

The Good ✅

  • Adjustable Retention Screws (Per Black Scorpion): Black Scorpion designs the retention to be fine-tuned with screws. On Will’s pouch, they didn’t get tight enough.
  • Cant and Ambidextrous Setup (Per Black Scorpion): Black Scorpion says it can be set straight up or at 45 degrees and run on either side. Will didn’t say how he ran his.
  • Matches His Belt: It goes on the Black Scorpion Gear belt Will uses.

The Not Good ❌

The deal-breaker is tagged.

  • Deal-breaker Retention Too Loose: The adjustable retention screws did not get tight enough to actually give good retention.
  • Never Made It Into Training: Because of the poor retention, Will never used it for the training and competitions he bought it for.

Product Description

Specs and maker’s details

Black Scorpion Gear’s main single AR pouch is the AR-15, M4, M16 Magazine Pouch, sold in black. Black Scorpion says it is ambidextrous, comes preset straight up and down (90 degrees) with a cant that can be changed to 45 degrees, and uses retention screws to fine-tune how tightly it holds the magazine. Its belt attachment has two tabs that adjust for 1.5 to 2 inch belts, and the brand covers its magazine carriers with a lifetime warranty against cracking or breaking.

Will’s is a single black AR pouch on a Black Scorpion Gear belt. He didn’t confirm the exact model, so we don’t claim model-specific details for his pouch.

What others think

How our verdict compares with other reviews

Overall reception: Coverage is thin. Black Scorpion Gear’s page shows 4.7 out of 5 from 588 reviews, but that feed is shared across the brand’s pouches, and we found almost no independent reviews of this AR pouch.

Where owners agree: Owners of Black Scorpion pouches like the price, the cant options and the adjustable retention. Black Scorpion itself tells buyers to check every screw and add thread locker.

Where owners disagree: How well the retention screws hold. Many buyers say retention is strong once dialed in, while one Reddit owner of the brand’s pistol pouches had mags fall out with the screws as tight as they would go.

Our take: Will’s pouch matches the second camp. The deal-breaker is retention that was too loose: the screws never got tight enough to hold his PMAGs or aluminum mags, so it never made it into training or competition.
